The HTC Desire – a year on. Android Vs Symbian

January 30, 2011

OK so it’s been nearly 365 days (a year) since I drove well over 60 miles to pick up my HTC Desire.

Being a Symbian man through-and-through, little did I know it was to change the way I lived and worked.

January 28, 2011

Yes, the classic turn-based Worm-em-up has finally ninja roped its way onto the Android Market. Worms for Android is here.

It’s good to see EA are still working on Android games and Worms is sure to be another favourite.

Check out the screenshots below and then decide whether you are man enough to take up the challenge!

[Update Oct 2011] I have also now added in my video review of the app so be sure to check it out!

Google not happy with the state of Android Market

January 27, 2011

Android MarketIt seems that Google aren’t too happy with how things on the Android Market are turning out. Although the Android Market now has hundreds of thousands of apps thats not what it’s all about.

It’s all about money.

If people aren’t paying for apps then developers won’t be happy. The problem is; where there’s a paid app there’s normally a free app that does just as well if not better than said paid app. This is what is hurting the Android developer community.

Google’s response to this is to introduce ways for developers to allow in-game charging of ‘premium’ content – kind of like the thing you see on Xbox Live with additional downloadable content.

Another plan is to make the mobile operators allow charging to your phone bill for apps. It seems people are more likely to buy things if they don’t have to worry about credit/debit cards. This would also help countries that aren’t currently supported through Google Checkout.

Amazingly cheap HTC Desire price: £9.99 hanset, 500 mins, 5000 texts, 1GB Internet for £18/month

HTC Desire Small

Don't miss this one!

I can’t believe how good this deal is. It betters the deal I got with T-Mobile (although that was a year ago I suppose) but it’s still definitely the best thing around if you’re looking at getting the Desire.

It’s provided by the 3 network which joined with Orange last year (giving much greater coverage) and great 3.5G speeds.

This offer can be found here:

OK so it’s a 24 month contract but if you get bored of the phone after a year (unlikely) then you could always sell it on and keep the fantastic deal with the SIM card

Android Froyo 2.2.2 Update coming to HTC Desire?

January 22, 2011

Android Robot and GingerbreadNexus One owners have been slightly less than excited about the 2.2.2 over-the-air update which should be out for their handsets over the next day or so. This update is said to be quite small (558KB) and is more of a ‘maintenance’ update than anything else.

I’m all for bug fixes if it helps me use my phone without problems. I must admit, the number of bugs in Froyo have been a lot fewer than in our intial 2.1 Eclair system so it’s good to see Google still looking at its previous OS’.

I suppose the next big question is if and when we’ll see this update on our HTC Desires (remember the Desire is basically the Nexus One with hardware buttons and a nice UI). The question after that is whether we’ll receive Gingerbread 2.3 on our phones in 2011? I have a feeling we will.

Plants Vs Zombies Android and Peggle Android nearly here!

January 18, 2011

OK so I’m a day late spotting these photos but Jeff Green, PopCap’s Director of Editorial and Social Media, posted some photos yesterday of himself playing Android versions of Plants Vs Zombies and Peggle.

They’re looking pretty good to me so hopefully they’ll be out of Beta soon so we can also get out slowly rotting flesh on them.

Click the images below to enlarge.

Plants Vs Zombies Android

Plants Vs Zombies Android never looked so good!

Peggle Android

Peggle Android looking pretty sweet as well!

If you haven’t seen my previous post about these games then be sure to check it out below. Hopefully PopCap will release some more of their classic games to Android soon.

[Update] Joystiq have reported:

PopCap isn’t sharing details on its upcoming Android titles, saying only that they are “coming along” and that the first titles — not necessarily Plants vs. Zombies or Peggle — should launch in Q2 2011.

So it looks like we may have to wait until June time before we see anything hitting our phones 😦

‘Amazon Appstore’ coming to Android

January 9, 2011

amazonappstoreAmazon have plans to release their own ‘Appstore’ for the Android mobile operating system.

The Apps on Amazon’s store will go through a testing and approval process before being allowed on the store. This is similar to the way Microsoft handle their Indie Games, Arcade games on the Xbox 360 – and yes, how Apple go about their App Store.

Amazon hope to takle the problems Google have experienced with their Market application and its quality control – Sexy Girls Wallpapers anyone?!

Here is what the Amazon Appstore team had to say:

At Amazon, we start with the customer and work backwards, and we’re always looking for ways to improve the customer experience.  The sheer number of apps available today makes it hard for customers to find high-quality, relevant products – and developers similarly struggle to get their apps noticed.  Amazon’s innovative marketing and merchandising features are designed to help customers find and discover relevant products from our vast selection, and we’re excited to apply those capabilities to the apps market segment.

This can only be good news for us Android users as it promises high quality apps and therefore, in theory, high quality developers to develop for the OS. We can expect to see the Appstore hit our phones late this year.  Head over to the Amazon Appstore Dev page for more info
