How to install a new ROM on your HTC Desire S [HD] Step-by-step tutorial

August 18, 2011

Hello lovely people, I hope you’re all well.

If you followed my video a few days back you should have successfully rooted your HTC Desire S. So what now? Well you’ll probably want to install a custom ROM on the phone.

Follow these simple steps and you’ll be up and running in no time! These steps will also work on the HTC Desire and Desire HD.

What you will need:
1 HTC Desire S phone
1 Cup of coffee

Step 1:
Install ROM Manager from the Android Market

Step 2:
Load ROM Manager and click the top link to flash the ClockworkMod Recovery tool. Just make sure you have the latest version installed.

Step 3:
Click on Download ROM from with ROM Manager and find a ROM that you want to install. I chose the Saga LBC Mod ROM which had some good reviews. Select the version you wish to download v0.5.3 is the one I installed in the video. Select to download the ROM without the keyboard arrows.

Step 4:
Once the ROM has downloaded it will ask you 3 questions. Tick all 3 boxes to be safe and then press OK. Your phone will now reboot and start the ROM installation process

Step 5:
Start drinking your coffee

Step 6:
After about 10 minutes the new ROM should have been installed and booted up. All done!

Any questions can be asked below in the comments.

HTC Desire 2.3 Gingerbread Update this month

July 11, 2011

After a bit of a holiday in the US of A I’m back in England and ready to get back to work 🙂

HTC were umming and ahhing about the Gingerbread update for the original Desire due to limits with the internal memory etc but then caved into the pressure of Desire owners and said they would indeed get the Gingerbread update sent out to the handset’s owners.

HTC have now confirmed the update will be rolled out this month. Obviously operator updates will follow shortly after but it’s great news for the public.

The Inquirer have just posted this on the story:

TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC has confirmed that the rollout of Android 2.3 Gingerbread to its Desire handset will begin by the end of the month.

It’s been a rocky road but HTC has finally given Desire owners a set forecast for the software upgrade. The news comes as a big relief to customers who are eagerly awaiting the newer version of the operating system.

As usual HTC used its Facebook page to make the announcement and said, “Hi everyone. As some of you have seen already, we have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire. Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July. Thank you again for your support.”

HTC first announced the update back in February but then changed its mind because of the memory limitations of the phone. Desire owners were understandably unhappy about the U-turn and a day later HTC caved in to the demand.

The HTC Desire – a year on. Android Vs Symbian

January 30, 2011

OK so it’s been nearly 365 days (a year) since I drove well over 60 miles to pick up my HTC Desire.

Being a Symbian man through-and-through, little did I know it was to change the way I lived and worked.

Android Froyo 2.2.2 Update coming to HTC Desire?

January 22, 2011

Android Robot and GingerbreadNexus One owners have been slightly less than excited about the 2.2.2 over-the-air update which should be out for their handsets over the next day or so. This update is said to be quite small (558KB) and is more of a ‘maintenance’ update than anything else.

I’m all for bug fixes if it helps me use my phone without problems. I must admit, the number of bugs in Froyo have been a lot fewer than in our intial 2.1 Eclair system so it’s good to see Google still looking at its previous OS’.

I suppose the next big question is if and when we’ll see this update on our HTC Desires (remember the Desire is basically the Nexus One with hardware buttons and a nice UI). The question after that is whether we’ll receive Gingerbread 2.3 on our phones in 2011? I have a feeling we will.

Changes in the HTC Desire firmware v

June 9, 2010
HTC Desire Small

Finally updated, the HTC Desire!

Just thought I’d post a couple of things I’d noticed that have changed in the new firmware from HTC. Let me know if you find any more.

  1. The Messages application has been updated. New messages now appear in bold text. Each thread has a number (in brackets) next to it denoting how many messages are in the thread to that person/group of people. To be honest I’d probably rather not have this number in my list but there is no way to turn it off. I have noticed that Messaging tends to work a lot slower than it did before. Sending a text message which spans say 2 or 4 messages takes a lot longer to go to the outbox ready to be sent…
  2. The YouTube app has been updated. You can now watch videos in HQ mode (no HD yet 😦 ) and the YouTube widget has also been updated to show a ‘feed’ of any new videos in your YouTube subscriptions. A nice touch.
  3. There are some new widgets! Go to the Add widget screen and then press “Get more HTC widgets”. The widgets that you saw in all the demos before the phone launched seem to be available. They are as follows: Coin Flip, Dice, Notes, Tip Calculator and the old one: Today in History. There are also a couple of 1×1 widgets for changing your Profile and your Ringtone.
  4. No more Facebook-network contact bug in the Messages app. HTC have finally fixed that annoying bug!

I haven’t noticed any improvements in battery life or start-up time but I’m sure I’ll find some more things out over the next few days.

New HTC Desire System/Firmware Update out today v

June 8, 2010

Thanks to Dale for the head’s-up, T-Mobile UK customers can now upgrade their Desires to the latest HTC firmware which happens to be version and weighs in at 24.41MB. This is a different version to what I reported the other day – perhaps due to operator/network branded changes…

To check for and download the update, simply go to Settings -> About phone -> System software updates and then press “Check now”. If the update is showing then you get the choice to download it via your phone’s network or via WiFi-only. Best to do the Wifi-only if you’re not in a good 3G area (and if you want to save on bandwidth if you don’t have an unlimited data plan.

Will post any further noticeable updates as and when I spot them.

Happy updating! 🙂

[Edit] It seems that you must have a well-charged battery to install the update. I’ve got 18% left but it won’t let me upgrade until the battery is charged enough…

[Edit] With 27% battery it let me start the update. The updater automatically backs up your settings and data and then reboots to the update mode – your phone is not usable during this time. Funky green update screen though 😉

[Edit] After allowing the phone to update (the process took about 10 minutes in total and there were several restarts) I finally got to the Homescreen to restore my backed up data from the SD card. The restore took AGES to perform and the phone was pretty much unusable during this process. After leaving it for a good 25 minutes (it only took about a minute to back up my data initially) I decided it was time to pull the battery. Upon un-locking the screen I had a message saying “HTC Sense” was “not responding. Force close / Wait” !! Right well, case off and battery out. Waited 60 seconds and re-started the phone. So far, I don’t seem to have lost anything but it wasn’t quite the smooth experience I was hoping for. I’m sure it was just me but thought I’d make you aware!

HTC Desire OTA firmware update: version 1.21.405.2

June 5, 2010

HTC have released a new software update for the HTC Desire (3rd June 2010) the firmware updates some bugs and also the following (as spotted by user “tuatha” on the XDA Developers forum)

Minor fixes. New radio image. New youtube app with HQ option (with a widget that doesn’t work if you’re logged in to your account). New bootloader. Fixed Facebook/unknown contact issue (haven’t verified this personally).

I flashed the rom from the dev forum a couple of days ago, but haven’t noticed any other changes yet.

The news widget still doesn’t update automatically.

So it looks like not all the bugs have been fixed yet but I’m sure we’ll get there slowly but surely.

The update is currently not available to T-Mobile customers (at time of writing) so let us know if you receive it on yours. Be sure to follow this thread on the XDA Developers forums for more info on the update.

Here is HTC’s description of the update:

Android Froyo 2.2 Update Official Video

May 29, 2010

If you haven’t already, check out the official Android Froyo 2.2 update video. It explains a few ideas of what you can expect when the update finally arrives (please be June!)

I was quite impressed with the frame rate tests, although haven’t noticed much slowdown at all when playing games…

For some more detailed information on what’s new, be sure to check out Gadeget DNA’s article here.

Froyo is coming to an HTC Desire near you soon!

Video of Android 2.2 Froyo running on the HTC Desire*

May 26, 2010

*OK so it’s actually running on a Google Nexus One but you know what I’m getting at here. This  is quite a good video actually showing the various features of the new firmware rather than just telling you about them.

I think my favourite new feature (apart from the SD apps) has to be the cool new Gallery…

What do you think?

HTC Desire first to get the new Android 2.2 Froyo Firmware Update – 23rd June?

May 25, 2010

Well just when you thought your phone couldn’t get any better. An HTC representative “let it slip” that HTC would be releasing the new Froyo 2.2 update this June – the 23rd to be precise.

Here is the quote that a disgruntled HTC Desire customer received from his telephone call to HTC:

”But you never heard this from me…. A new update is coming the 23rd of June and you will be able to put some apps on to the micro sd card.”

Apparently he was complaining about the lack of space available on his phone to install apps.

So, is this story true or some sort of sick joke? Either way it’s exciting to think we might be getting the update a lot sooner than we first thought.
