Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) coming to HTC Desire S?

November 24, 2011

image

Well in a word, no – not officially from HTC anyway and not yet. Perhaps. Maybe. Confused? So am I.

Here’s the official blurb from HTC (taken from their Facebook wall)

HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we’re thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid, on sale beginning today, is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners. We’re continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Now I do recall having Gingerbread update issues from HTC before. First they weren’t going to bring it to the Desire and then, after a number of complaints, they folded and got it sorted. Can we expect the same regarding Ice Cream Sadnwich (which the cool kids are calling ICS)?

Only time will tell.

Ice Cream Sandwich features a tonne of improved and new features including Face Unlock, even better multitasking and a revamped interface.

Obviously HTC not officially giving Desire users won’t stop them getting their hands on it one way or another. It won’t be long ’til the “scene” get hold of it and port it across to every phone in the world*

*bar the iPhone of course (oh and the Nokia 3330).

HTC Desire 2 shots leaked – front camera, Gingerbread 2.3.1 and 3 mics!

February 6, 2011

Wow, not a year since the HTC Desire was launched in the UK and shots of it’s successor are already floating around the net.

PocketNow.com reported earlier this morning that the phone actually has 3 mics as well – probably for noise cancellation which the original Desire didn’t get (although the Nexus One did). This was one of the things that kept the price down.

The Desire 2 has a front facing camera and a super AMOLED capacitive touch screen. It also seems the hardware buttons we’ve been used to on the bottom of the phone have been removed in favour of touch-screen ones. Is this a good thing or bad? Reports from Nexus One users originally were that they weren’t very responsive. Hopefully HTC have tweaked things a bit but I think I prefer something I can actually press. Expect it to run the latest Android Gingerbread operating system 2.3.1.

No other details yet but expect an announcement at the 2011 Mobile World Congress the week after next. In the mean time, feast your eyes on these:

The HTC Desire – a year on. Android Vs Symbian

January 30, 2011

OK so it’s been nearly 365 days (a year) since I drove well over 60 miles to pick up my HTC Desire.

Being a Symbian man through-and-through, little did I know it was to change the way I lived and worked.

Android Froyo 2.2.2 Update coming to HTC Desire?

January 22, 2011

Android Robot and GingerbreadNexus One owners have been slightly less than excited about the 2.2.2 over-the-air update which should be out for their handsets over the next day or so. This update is said to be quite small (558KB) and is more of a ‘maintenance’ update than anything else.

I’m all for bug fixes if it helps me use my phone without problems. I must admit, the number of bugs in Froyo have been a lot fewer than in our intial 2.1 Eclair system so it’s good to see Google still looking at its previous OS’.

I suppose the next big question is if and when we’ll see this update on our HTC Desires (remember the Desire is basically the Nexus One with hardware buttons and a nice UI). The question after that is whether we’ll receive Gingerbread 2.3 on our phones in 2011? I have a feeling we will.

Video of Android 2.2 Froyo running on the HTC Desire*

May 26, 2010

*OK so it’s actually running on a Google Nexus One but you know what I’m getting at here. This  is quite a good video actually showing the various features of the new firmware rather than just telling you about them.

I think my favourite new feature (apart from the SD apps) has to be the cool new Gallery…

What do you think?

HTC Desire vs Nexus One – Game Test

May 19, 2010

Just found an interesting video on YouTube comparing the 3D game capabilities of both these phones side-by-side.

At first I was a bit worried about how long this bloke’s fingernails were who is holding the Nexus One. However, when I saw how crap they were at the games I realised it must have been a girl 😉

Which phone do you think performs better?

How to get Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation for the HTC Desire

April 19, 2010

Google Maps LogoFor reasons best known to Google, their turn-by-turn navigation is currently not available for beta testing in the UK.

This means you actually have to pay for CoPilot or actually, heaven forbid, read a map!

Thankfully though, there is a way round this by installing a slightly modified version of the Maps application… (more…)
