The HTC One X – So close yet so far

April 6, 2012

Well, I’ve been patient enough to wait for the HTC One X to come out and thought I’d go have a look at it seeing as my contract with T-Mobile is now up (has it really been 2 years since I started this blog?!).

I went to my local T-Mobile store to check it out and jesus – it’s huge!

The offer I had from T-Mobile retentions was to stick at my current £10/month tarrif (100 minutes, unlimited texts/Internet) and pay £260 for the handset – not a bad deal at all really considering how much the phone is worth.

Anyway, I went and checked it out in the O2 shop (where they had a non-dummy version) and it was a lovely device but just incredibly big compared to what I’m used to. I’m not saying I wouldn’t get used to the lovely 4.7″ screen but it is quite a big jump up from the Desire S.

I was all ready to buy the handset from T-Mobile and do a HTC One X Vs HTC Desire S comparison review and video but they didn’t have the handset in white sadly. If they had, I would have been writing a very different post.

I know white phones are a bit ‘ooh look at me’ but I felt like I wanted a change from the usual black colour of my Desire S. So anyway, I didn’t go for it in the end. I think I’m going to hold out and see what Samsung have to offer with the Samsung Galaxy S3 handset which will hopefully be officially announced on the 22nd May.

Patience hurts sometimes.

HTC Desire 2 shots leaked – front camera, Gingerbread 2.3.1 and 3 mics!

February 6, 2011

Wow, not a year since the HTC Desire was launched in the UK and shots of it’s successor are already floating around the net.

PocketNow.com reported earlier this morning that the phone actually has 3 mics as well – probably for noise cancellation which the original Desire didn’t get (although the Nexus One did). This was one of the things that kept the price down.

The Desire 2 has a front facing camera and a super AMOLED capacitive touch screen. It also seems the hardware buttons we’ve been used to on the bottom of the phone have been removed in favour of touch-screen ones. Is this a good thing or bad? Reports from Nexus One users originally were that they weren’t very responsive. Hopefully HTC have tweaked things a bit but I think I prefer something I can actually press. Expect it to run the latest Android Gingerbread operating system 2.3.1.

No other details yet but expect an announcement at the 2011 Mobile World Congress the week after next. In the mean time, feast your eyes on these:

Android Froyo 2.2.2 Update coming to HTC Desire?

January 22, 2011

Android Robot and GingerbreadNexus One owners have been slightly less than excited about the 2.2.2 over-the-air update which should be out for their handsets over the next day or so. This update is said to be quite small (558KB) and is more of a ‘maintenance’ update than anything else.

I’m all for bug fixes if it helps me use my phone without problems. I must admit, the number of bugs in Froyo have been a lot fewer than in our intial 2.1 Eclair system so it’s good to see Google still looking at its previous OS’.

I suppose the next big question is if and when we’ll see this update on our HTC Desires (remember the Desire is basically the Nexus One with hardware buttons and a nice UI). The question after that is whether we’ll receive Gingerbread 2.3 on our phones in 2011? I have a feeling we will.

Video of Android 2.2 Froyo running on the HTC Desire*

May 26, 2010

*OK so it’s actually running on a Google Nexus One but you know what I’m getting at here. This  is quite a good video actually showing the various features of the new firmware rather than just telling you about them.

I think my favourite new feature (apart from the SD apps) has to be the cool new Gallery…

What do you think?

HTC Desire vs Nexus One – Game Test

May 19, 2010

Just found an interesting video on YouTube comparing the 3D game capabilities of both these phones side-by-side.

At first I was a bit worried about how long this bloke’s fingernails were who is holding the Nexus One. However, when I saw how crap they were at the games I realised it must have been a girl 😉

Which phone do you think performs better?

HTC Desire (Nexus One) Car Mount/Dock

Google have unveiled their official car dock for the Nexus One. Coming in at an amazingly excessive £55.91 $55 [sorry didn’t convert properly] you’re possibly better off getting something else.

A detailed HTC Desire review from UK T3 Magazine

March 31, 2010

T3 have published a more detailed review of the HTC Desire on their site. They have acknowledged that the Desire is an iPhone-beater (not killer because you can’t kill a phone that’s already sold millions can you?).

Here are a few snippets:

Right now, let’s put aside that dumb phrase “iPhone killer”. The fact that a phone is better than Apple’s all-conquering, landscape-changing, gadget-genre-inventing device doesn’t “kill” it, any more than Chelsea defeating Man United means that that particular football team is dispatched to the Araldite Glue League (Northern Area). But make no mistake: this phone is better than the iPhone.

As we mentioned, the Desire is one of the most powerful Android phones on offer, and it shows when you pick it up for the first time. It reacts to your slightest touch, slipping between home screens without a hint of slowdown, and allowing you to open multiple applications without destroying the user experience.
